Course Description

Requirements for this course can be satisfied anytime during the semester at own pace. Must purchase: The Broken Flute: The Native Experience in Books for Children, Edited by Doris Seale and Beverly Slapin (Available at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com or your favorite bookseller.) This online literature class introduces students to the written works of contemporary Native American authors. There are options for exploration of poetry, prose, fiction, nonfiction, biography, curriculum, and academic articles. Critical analysis of reading selections for contemporary Native issues will be assessed. Appreciation of Native concepts, culture, and writing as a tool for social activism will be developed. Point of view, setting, characters, plot, theme, and symbolism will be analyzed.
