What Type of Student Are You?

You are probably one of two types of students who will use this site: a degree seeking student or a "special" non-degree seeking student.

1) Are you looking for an entire program — either a degree or certificate?

If so, you are a "degree-seeking" student. Look for courses that fulfill requirements for the program of study in which you're interested.

2) Are you already enrolled in a program and you're just looking for an additional course or two, OR are you looking to take a course for enjoyment?

If so, you're a "special" or non-degree seeking student. Look for courses with open enrollment.

There are different policies and procedures to follow depending upon your classification. Keep this in mind as you use this site.

Through the course search you will find courses in the UW System that are offered via distance education technologies. You can apply for admission as a "special" student and register for most of the courses listed in the course catalog -- unless a course is open for enrollment only to degree-seeking students. For courses that are part of a degree program, there is a more formal admission process that must be completed prior to enrolling in the course.

Through the UW Distance Learning Program search, or UW HELP Online, you find full programs and certificates offered by campuses in the UW System. These programs require a formal admission process.

Unless otherwise indicated in the course information, you can apply for admission at apply.wisconsin.edu. You will find both degree-seeking and "special" student applications for all campuses in the UW System.
